The final product of the batik will always be different and cannot be made the same exact way. 。The region of this batik is from Tanjungbumi, a district on the island of Madura. Historically, the women of Tanjungbumi would focus on the batik-making process while waiting for their husbands or fathers to return from their trips as fishermen or merchants. The common motifs from this region consists of boats, patterns of sea waves, birds, butterflies, fish, shrimps, flower bouquets, phoenix, and Persian peacocks. Batik from the island of Madura also has vibrant colors and patterns. In addition, Batik makers from Madura prefers to create the batik based on their own creativity and imagination instead of common, fixed patterns. Their patterns always have irregularities. 。The unique thing about batik Madura is the process of gentongan. This process uses a barrel to soak the batik cloth. This technique is mostly done for a particular color—indigo (although other colors such as red, yellow, and green are also used). The cloth is soaked using nyamplung oil and ash from wood burning stoves. A craftsmen would dip this cloth for 24 hours and repeat the process every day for the next month or even 6 months depending on their desired color(s). The coloring of the barrel is the most important and difficult process.
